Astronomical Background

The Strawberry Moon is the full Moon that occurs in June, when wild strawberries ripen. A full Moon happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly (a position called syzygy), so the Moon's near side is fully illuminated. This occurs roughly every 29.5 days. The name comes not from its color, but from its timing: the wild strawberries that start to ripen in early summer gave June's Full Moon its name.

While it appears as a normal full lunar disc, when near the horizon it may look yellow-orange due to Earth's atmosphere, but otherwise shines a bright white. Because the Earth-Moon geometry is the same each month, the Strawberry Moon often rises and sets in roughly the same part of the sky.

Many Native American tribes named this moon after the strawberry harvesting season, marking a time of abundance and gathering.

Ancient folklore suggests that couples who meet under the Strawberry Moon are blessed with eternal love, as sweet as the berries that ripen beneath its light.
